Gram Parsons

Nudie Cohn/Rhinestone Cowboy

The Selvedge Yard is one of my favorite blogs, I love it…Jon Patrick does a brilliant job at encapsulating the essence of cool from times past…or I should say from certain things past and influencing present style. Harley Davidson Motorcycles, outlaw bikers (come on, where do you think that current denim craze came from), Johnny Cash, Steve McQueen, 1960s/70s Americana, and beautiful photography by the masters (Penn, Altman).

A favorite post…this one on Mr. Nudie Cohn, the fashion designer and tailor behind the rhinestone-studded, hand-embroidered suits worn by some of the best (or at least brightest) in country/rock music…Dwight Yoakam, ZZ top, Elvis, George Jones, Gene Autry, Cher, Ben Harper….

Gram Parsons and Keith Richards

I’m not sure what it is, I’ve loved the Rolling Stones for as long as I can remember…saw them in concert twice in college….but for some reason reading Keith Richards’ incredibly good autobiography Life has me thinking he was one sexy dude (and how on earth does someone who has consumed as many narcotics as he has ever remember as many details). Before it was just he is one talented musician.

Not too long ago I saw “Gram Parsons: Fallen Angel,” and while I still enjoy his music just as much after watching the film as I did before I think a lot less of the man.  From reading Life and watching the film on Parsons I learned the two were like brothers for a short period of time sharing a mutual admiration for music (Parsons introduced Richards to country music) and drugs. Putting the latter bit aside what I would give to have been in the room for some of their conversations. Just to sit and listen to them talk about the music, play music…OMG!
