I don’t think anyone really needs either a Hornworm or a Fisher Cat in their lives, but I’ve had both in the last week. First the Hornworm shows up on one of my tomatoes (they can destroy tomato plants), but with wasp eggs laid on it. I’m far from an expert, but my understanding is the wasp eggs kill the worm. The worm was thrown into the compost pile and the tomatoes seem safe.

The other night I awoke to screeching. I couldn’t see anything outside, but knew it was a fisher cat. I’ve no idea what it was doing, but it sure made a heck of a loud sound. An eerie one at that! My cat was safe and sound on the bed and the next day I saw the duck families, so who knows…but if I don’t have a repeat of that anytime soon all the better.
Check out this video if you want to experience the sound of a fisher cat.

The third Tuesday of the summer months (or July and August), Aquaholics (a terrific surf/stand up paddle shop) in Kennebunk, Maine holds a special surfer night for children with Autism, Aspergers, Down syndrome …. The shop needs two people for each special surfer, one to help catch the wave and one to run interference and redirect. I went down with a few surfers from the Portland area and did both. It was a spectacular night. The children’s smiles could have said it all, but then this golden light came from the sky – one of the most beautiful nights of the summer, and then a rainbow shone through the clouds. It was magical, the entire thing and I cannot wait to do it again. To watch those amazing children with no fear and just pure happiness wanting to go again and again, and so loving!! My heart is full tonight, my feet and hair sandy, my arms exhausted, and I will sleep soundly. xooooooo

I’ve mentioned on this blog before hardly having a sense of smell, but that does not stop me from buying beautiful scented items. I can smell them, just not as well as a person with an average nose and aren’t some of the sweetest smelling things the prettiest? This Green Deep Exfoliant Shower Soap from Waterl’eau is a little bit of luxury in the shower. It smells like I would thinks the woods would after a rain. Black Parrot in Rockland, Maine sells them (so might their Portland, Maine shop). For something extra special these candles are divine! The Rosemary Garden Votivo is my favorite.

Want to see the whole enchilada (aka 10 pound green squash) check out this post (or just scroll down the wall). When presented with how to “deal” with the squash from my garden (don’t think I’m not just a little giddy writing that..I mean it came from “my” garden!!) I took to asking professional chefs (thank you Martha Hall Foose!!) and friends (as always Elizabeth you came through) with a. what to make with it and b. how the heck to break it open. Last fall the advice of a farmer who sold me a Blue Hubbard Squash worked out. Just put it in a plastic bag and slam it on some pavement. Sure, why not….isn’t that part of every vegetable recipe? Well, I did and it worked! Thing is this Green Squash of mine has a harder (thicker?) skin and I can say with some assurance there is no plastic grocery bag big enough to bag it. Elizabeth said use an axe. Of course, the obvious kitchen tool. An axe I said, really? Thinking this could be fun provided I don’t miss and god knows. We decided it might be good to inaugurate the axe as green squash breaking open tool by documenting it at our friend Annie’s. Honestly, I’m not sure before yesterday I’d ever swung an axe. The price/benefit of living in Maine?
Later today I’ll drive home and per Chef Foose’s advice use it in a zucchini recipe. To be fair, she recommended making zucchini bread…and I will with future squash (there is plenty more growing outside my barn). Today, I’ll make Barbara Kingsolver’s Zucchini Chocolate Chip Cookies from her admirable book Animal, Vegetable, Miracle. The results are delicious, well at least when made with zucchini so I can only imagine how delectable they’ll be with this yummy squash.
You know a funny thing about living in Maine? This is auto related. The stuff we Mainers carry about in our cars and the cleanliness…or lack thereof. Mine is full of dog hair, dirt (from transporting plants…), sand (from the TWO times I went to the beach to surf this summer…I know miserably low number I promise to raise next season), and an axe. I cannot even get in the glovebox. I do keep a clean home, I swear!! Oh, and I have no sense or hardly a sense of smell…seriously I have to stick my nose into something to smell it. Anyhow, this axe…I find it kind of funny having it resting on the floor behind my drivers seat. At least on the way up the coast (where the “act” took place) I had the proof/excuse…should I have been pulled over for speeding (I’ll own up to the fact that I do on occasion)…of the squash. Well, suppose now I have a story and the results.
Part 2 will be the bread I make and maybe a peak at those cookies….

Fifty-one years ago last month, Harper Lee published her Pulitzer Prize winning To Kill a Mockingbird. Set in the Deep South in the 1930s, the poignant story of racial injustice remains timeless. There are still hate groups, hate crimes, and a need to teach tolerance. Thankfully, there is the SPLC to help with all of that. Get involved and help stop hate. Each of us can do our part in our own community. Through acts small and large, we can can have a profound impact on the world around us.
The Southern Poverty Law Center is dedicated to fighting hate and bigotry, and to seeking justice for the most vulnerable members of our society. Using litigation, education and other forms of advocacy, we work toward the day when the ideals of equal justice and equal opportunity will be a reality.
