In America

This photograph by Aaron Huey is inspiring.

The Selby

Tuesday, March 30th, 2010

A friend told me about this site this morning and I have not been able to get it out of my mind. It features interesting people in their creative spaces.

Mast Brothers Chocolate

Monday, March 29th, 2010

Anyone who spends any amount of time around me eventually discovers I love chocolate. I love it morning, noon, and night. I prefer it dark and with salt and sometimes with caramel. I love it from Egypt, Belgium, France, Isle au Haut (I especially love it from there), Ireland, South Africa, San Francisco… and well you get the idea. I love it in croissants (so much so), with peanut butter, squeezed into doughnuts, draped about marshmallows and graham crackers, sprinkled on yogurt, on pretzels, in cookies…I love it warm and cold in solid and liquid forms. It is the very essence of goodness. My best friend Sabrina would no doubt agree, her birthday message to me ended with “And for the love of God eat chocolate.” Hello, of course!  I thought I had an addiction to it so I tried not to eat it for a few days. Those days were horrible and unfortunate and to the best of my ability will not be repeated. So what if I am addicted to chocolate, I love it so. Well, now that we have all shared in my rather dramatic introduction…I just wanted to say/write I finally got to try Mast Brothers Chocolate bars and they are pretty good. Actually, the Dark Chocolate with Fleur de Sel is very good.  The packaging is adorable and they have a clever website with a terrific silent B&W film. I love that there are artisan chocolate makers in the heart of Brooklyn. Fantastic!

Rogues Gallery

Monday, March 29th, 2010

This weather really has me clinging to comfort topics - light, fashion, and of course chocolate!  First, fashion. There is nothing quite like the feeling of slipping into that perfectly knit oversized sweater, or wrapping it about your waste while donning a fun t-shirt and favorite pair of jeans.  Rogues Gallery, based in Portland, Maine seems to be aware of my sartorial strategies offering the blazers, sweaters, jackets and t-shirts to balance out my ladylike meets boyish casual look. Every time I shop there I feel like I am in my (currently imaginary) boyfriend’s closet. In addition to having an incredibly cool space they also have really nice staff. Thank you Graeme for entrusting me with a few beautiful pieces for the shoot later this week, I promise to love them as if they were mine!!

Much Light

Monday, March 29th, 2010

I have not posted about my love for lighting in a while, and considering how dark it is outside with all this icky weather I think we could all use a few pictures of some lit up lovelies.

Loving books the way I do and being an avid recycler (come on who does not these days, you should!!) I want to literally (no pun intended) hug the folks over at Lula Dot who created this light made up of pages from books people were discarding. Imagine eating, sitting, walking under thousands of words and thoughts. Personally, I think it is an incredibly romantic idea.

I saw these lamps by the incredibly talented glass blower Omar Arbel for BOCCI during my recent trip to New York City.

Have a Beautiful Weekend

Friday, March 26th, 2010

I am so excited to have all day tomorrow to read (so many books I have started and want to finish), walk my dog, and start my edible garden!!  Tonight I am going to a concert with my friend Christine. Enjoy the weekend. xo

Just Minutes Ago

Friday, March 26th, 2010

I heard about some new dog treats and of course had to get them for my dog Paige. Minutes ago she demolished the first sample of Yoghund. I guess she likes it!

Thank You

Friday, March 26th, 2010

My friend Anne Mahle always goes above and beyond when it comes to gifting. The best part, the goodies she gives are homemade. Thank you Annie for the chocolate tart, fingerless gloves, and homemade dill pickles (sooo good with crackers and hard goat cheese). I cannot resist the pickles, same was with the tart (which is now  little more than crumbs). The gloves are perfect these days. xoxo

The Sugar Bush

Friday, March 26th, 2010

This Sunday sugarhouses around Maine and Vermont will open their doors to the public for tastings, carriage rides, and tours.  The Maine Maple Producers Association and Vermont Maple have all the information you need to plan your day. This is a great opportunity to learn the basics on how maple syrup is made and check out old (buckets) and new (tubing) equipment.

A couple photos as a result of a recent trip to New Hampshire and Vermont to learn more about sugaring. I head to Vermont next week with Country Living for a photo shoot (photos and commentary forthcoming).

Chocolate Peanut Butter Bars

Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010

I found this brownie/bar recipe in the book Blissful Brownies my friend Sandy gave to me for my recent birthday. I decided to make these for a party earlier this evening, and have a feeling I will be baking them a lot more.

Chocolate Peanut Butter Bars
Makes 25

10 1/2 oz/300 g milk chocolate (I recommend using Guittard’s chocolate chips for this recipe. I get mine at Whole Foods.)
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour (try to use local if you can, I am finding it really does make a difference)
1 tsp baking powder
8 oz/225 g butter
1 3/4 cups brown sugar
2 cups rolled oats
1/2 cup chopped mixed nuts (I just used peanuts and walnuts, because that is what I had lying around.)
1 egg, beaten (again, local if you know someone with chickens…)
14 oz/400 g sweetened condensed milk
1/3 cup crunchy peanut butter (I use Jif)

Preheat the oven to 350F. Finely chop the chocolate (unless you are using chips). Sift the flour and baking powder into a large bowl.
Add the butter to the flour and rub in until the mixture resembles bread crumbs. Stir in the sugar, oats, and chopped nuts.
Put a quarter of the mixture into a bowl and stir in the chopped chocolate. Set aside.
Stir the egg into the remaining mixture, then press into the bottom of a 12 x 18-inch roasting pan.
Bake the base in the preheated oven for 15 minutes. Meanwhile, mix the condensed milk and peanut butter together. Pour the mixture over the base and spread evenly, then sprinkle the reserved chocolate mixture on top and press down lightly.
Return to the oven and bake for an additional 20 minutes, until golden brown. Let cool in the pan, then cut into bars or squares.
