Dear friends, fellow bloggers, and readers. Thank you for making my first year of blogging so fun. Your comments mean a lot to me. To cap off the New Year I am bundling up and heading out into the Maine night with friends. Who knows what the new decade will bring, but I am ready for it. Big hugs and full glasses of champagne to you all.

This is a fun and eco-friendly holiday wish list from Celia at Omnivore Books on Food in San Francisco. I spent an afternoon there earlier this year and thanks to the savvy staff picked up some gems including Bryant Terry’s Vegan Soul Kitchen.
Celia’s wish list for this holiday season.
A pair of CARwalk blue plaid wool Eco-sneaks from Simply Shoes

A set of copper cookware from Dehillerin in Paris.
Shelf space for all the vintage books on my website that I have to sell since I’m out of room.
A culinary tour of Turkey with EatSmart guides.

Home sweet home. I had the loveliest time on the west coast, but am happy to be snuggled up in a blanket by my dog back in Maine. With holiday guests beginning to arrive Friday morning I still have much to do. The adorable red gnome I found in Digs in (West Coast) Portland, a huge poinsettia, and my lengthy grocery list are about the only physical evidence I possess any holiday spirit. While not necessarily craft-challenged, I just have not been around to do much. Sound like I am feeling defensive? I am, but only until I can get my hands on decorations stored in the garage. Some day I want to have a fireplace with a roaring fire and a mantel topped with vintage glass jars of every size and shape filled with feathers or ornaments. This year I am going to hang lights and string up the holiday cards loved ones were kind enough to send.
For the first (and hopefully only) time ever I am sending an e-card. Actually, an e-photo. Slim Aarons images are intimate glimpses of beautiful people and the places they played. The untouched essence he captured departed along with him, leaving only his gorgeous and dreamy books such as A Place in the Sun. A friend worked with him at Town and Country on a project years ago and I was relieved to hear and now share that she said he was delightful. So I suppose if I am going to send an e-anything this season this pen and paper gal is going to send a Slim Aarons classic. This photo was taken by Aarons of his wife Rita in 1955. Happy Holidays!!! I wish you good health and joy wherever you are and whoever you are with.

MidCoast Maine is fast becoming the locale for hip and fun boutiques filled with pretty handmade items I daydream about more than I probably should. fourTWELVE is one of those shops in Rockland chocked full of beautiful pieces I would love to fill my home with. Full disclosure, I bought myself an early holiday present from there - the Sailing Ship pillow by Thomas Paul. I mentioned it in a post a few weeks ago, walked into Beth Bowley’s gorgeous boutique and ran to it. Literally, ran to and grabbed it.
Here are a few seaworthy holiday items Beth recommends for the maritime lover in your life (all can be found in her boutique fourTWELVE).
Maritime images from Thomas Paul…these striking indigo print natural jute pillows will make any sofa a sailor’s safe port.

For the Birder on your list a Sweet Bella Bird call…for localivores the Black Headed Gull. Beautifully hand crafted in France by Monsieur Morel. Now…after all these years you can finally say “hello” to our ubiquitous friends.

Phillip Plisson, renowned French photographer, shares his inspiring photos of, and thoughts about, our majestic oceans and seas. Plisson has been studying and capturing images of these mighty bodies of water for years and his obsession is our gain.
Sailors’ Wisdom: Day by Day. Striking images accompanied by wisdom and quotes for everyday of the year.

The Sea. An oversized volume with breath taking photos, and thoughts about, Plisson’s love of the sea.

Thomas Paul Melamine – Sea Life Collection…a quartet of beautiful graphic sea creatures on sturdy retro melamine. Dishwasher safe and super chic. Available in three different sizes 11′ dinner plates, middle 9″ and coasters 4 1/2″.

John Derian – master of all things decoupage has created decorative oval plates that are perfect for any seaside abode. Just the thing for a side table and absolutely wall art worthy.

Jo Ellen and her daughter Jessica run one of my favorite shops in MidCoast Maine, the cheerful home decor/gift shop Jo Ellen Designs. Located in downtown Camden, Maine the shop is a beacon for design savvy shoppers wanting to spruce up their home and catch up with the friendly mom and daughter team. Before opening the shop, which features heirloom rugs and pillows Jo Ellen designs, she was a successful children’s book illustrator.
Here is Jo Ellen and Jessica’s holiday wish list:
Collection of little cups and saucers from Arendal Ceramics.
Jessica really wants a “Loring” Tumbleweed Tiny House built on a meadow in Hope, Maine and customized with a loft and built in bookshelves everywhere. Jo Ellen wants Jessica to build this house so she can decorate it!!

Both want a copy of the “Year of Feathers” 2010 calendar from The Wild Unknown.
Jessica wants the month of February off so she can participate in a book arts residency at the Maine Media Workshops. And if Jo Ellen had the February off she would want, more than anything, not to be afraid of planes so she could travel absolutely everywhere.
Both want their friend Scott Overlock to wake up from a coma and walk out of the hospital.
Jessica wants a training program that will have her ready for the Timberman half-ironman in August.
Both want this suzani from The Loaded Trunk - there is only one so who gets it!??

Both would love any of Lulu Frost’s jewelry, especially the “Triple Bee Necklace” or anything in the “Collage” collection.
Jo Ellen and Jessica wish every artist and non-artist alike (guess that’s everyone) to read Karl Paulnack’s address to parents and students at the Boston Conservatory.
As a special treat, Jessica and Jo Ellen’s gift suggestions from Jo Ellen Designs stock:
Fox & Vine Blue rug and pillow

Garden Deer Red rug and pillow
Jo Ellen’s hand painted furniture
The crystal cross bottles Jessica’s brother makes from vintage materials and swarovski crystals
Klockwerks clocks
A collection of indochine tableware they just started to carry
Glass fawn and doe vases (from Roost)
Traditional stellen ornaments and wreaths

These holiday wish lists, void for the most part of a trip to the mall and marketers “it” items, are really getting me into the spirit. I hope they are doing the same for you.
It is such a joy to share with you this wish list from Margaret Hathaway, author of Living With Goats: Everything You Need to Know to Start Your Own Backyard Herd and The Year of the Goat: 40,000 Miles and the Quest for the Perfect Cheese.
1. 600 feet of semi-permanent goat fencing to enclose paddock
2. ecocozy recycled wool tea cozy

3. Tree of Life yoga mat
4. Three pear saplings

5. KitchenAid sausage stuffer attachment for my meat grinder
6. and 100 feet of organic sausage casings
7. Vintage wooden cheese paddle and/or wooden butter molds
8. Milking Devon cow, preferably pregnant

Margaret and her husband Karl host homesteading workshops at Ten Apple Farm in Southern Maine throughout the year. Be sure to check their website soon for the 2010 winter schedule. Past workshops include Preserving and Canning, Basic Home Cheesemaking, and Baking. I took one recently and am eager to attend another having learned a lot, met some really nice people, and enjoyed a delicious homemade lunch courtesy of Margaret. A workshop could be the perfect gift for a foodie!!

These wish lists are so fun! Following are Don and Samantha Lindgren’s holiday wish lists. As owners of Rabelais Books in Portland, Maine they see me on a pretty frequent basis. I love hanging out in their shop, it represents everything I love in life - food, land, agriculture, and books (tons of them) on all.
From Samantha:
As an adult the holidays are all about giving special homemade gifts to my loved ones. I love to give sweet treats whether baked or preserved. We can all use a little more sweetness in our busy lives. I try to can up some sweet preserves in the late Summer when everything is in season, but have been known to pot up jars of chocolate or caramel sauce this time of year. And then there are the cookies….
In no particular order, with no particular level of importance…
• A second mixer bowl and paddle for my Kitchenaid mixer. At this time of year, when I am in my cookie craze, a second bowl and paddle would make things go much more smoothly. I learned well in professional kitchens to clean as I go, but having two bowls would mean I could double my productivity before I had to wash anything….

• A Chatsford four cup Bone China teapot. Love my morning tea. For the past couple of years I have been quite happy with my Bodum glass pot. This year I feel the need to upgrade to the Bone China, just like my Grandmother would have used.
• A king sized down quilt. Sharing the bed with a dog and at least one, sometimes two, cats can make for some chilly exposed toes with our full sized quilt. We like to keep the thermostat cool, we both sleep better that way, but our beloved terrier mutt Raleigh uses up more covers than his small size belies.
• The perfect pair of black leather boots. Low calf height, flat heel, with real leather bottoms. Anyone seen these?
• A gift certificate to my favorite yarn store, Knitwit on Congress Street in the East End of Portland. My friend Anna, the owner, has the most wonderful taste in yarn, her shop is a wonderland of beautiful textures and colors. Oh the fun I could have, after Christmas, when all my Holiday knitting was done….

From Don
Here are a few of my favorite things to wish for, some in the plausible realm, others are a real reach:
• The English language edition of the Rene Redzepi’s Noma cookbook. It’s become the single hardest modern cookbook to attain, made even more difficult by the fact that the chef would likely buy back copies and destroy them if he could. The perils of perfectionism…

• New fences at our place, so we can go ahead and get the pigs and sheep we want. If our dilapidated fences had been strong and complete when we bought our place, we’d be overrun with farm animals by now. Fortunately, the fence was broken, and we had time to learn something before acquiring farm animals. Now we’re ready!

• A New Holland t4030 all wheel drive tractor with front loader. A useful (and expensive) toy.
• Good health for all of our friends and family members.
• More bookshelves!

A year ago I saw Eric Ritter’s furniture in a magazine and knew some day I would own at least one piece. While that day has not arrived yet, I am still as determined as ever to have one of his chairs placed solidly outside on my (future) deck. This is where I will spend my free moments reading, drinking, and of course eating chocolate chip cookies. Daydreaming done, and back to Eric. After seeing his work I contacted him about a project I was working on at the time I thought would make a good match. Longer story short the project worked out enough that I am getting to know Eric and his lovely wife Joanna. They are the couple you marvel at - renovating an old (and rather large) farmhouse themselves (for the most part), planting a (not quite as large) garden, starting bee hives, cooking, filming, looking to live a sustainable (upcycling, recycling…) and authentic life filled with creative people and things.
Eric is a trained designer who designs and builds one of a kind furniture using traditional craftsmanship and sustainable practices. His Morphology series is an artistic and environmentally friendly combination of solid stainless steel (high recycled content and minimal maintenance) and wood stained with natural oils. All of his work is done with 100% emission free Maine derived electricity, which he purchases as an offset through Maine Renewable Energy.

Morphology Series Occasional Chair (on my wish list)
Eric Ritter’s list of what he loves to give.
Wood fired pottery by Jesse Stevens. Each piece has unique markings of fire passing by their surface. 207.647.5368
Items from Eli-phant, from individual craftsman to you.

Wood Candle Holder Eli-Phant
The book Cathedral by David Macaulay.
Plant stand by ritterfurniture. Lets remember to keep growing things.
Items from Field. Capture the Ephemeral and find a new field of vision.
