Could be the best holiday gift you ever give. Contact a tattoo shop (in the Portland area my money is on Squid and Whale, in Brooklyn Scott Campbell, and anywhere else ask around – where you go and who does the work is as important (if not more so) than the what one gets and where it goes. The tattoo network is pretty tight (and opinionated) so my advice is if you don’t live in Maine or near Manhattan contact one of the shops I’m linking to in this post and ask them for advice on where to go (likely they’ll ask more questions than where do you live). Let the person your gifting the tattoo decide what he/she wants and where – it’s such a personal (and permanent) thing. I love mine, one I’ve had for 14/15 years the other less than a year and I’m still growing into it. Prices can range from $200 – 1000 + depending on how much work one gets so a gift-certificate for $300 – 500 is pretty nice.

Kate Neckel is a Manhattan based artist whose work has been featured in a few stores, galleries, a museum, magazine, and the Ace Hotel. I’m a pretty big fan of her doodles. So is the Ace Hotel, the owners asked her to doodle on a wall in one of their rooms. Rad!!
A few months ago I wrote her to ask permission to use some of her photos from the Ace Hotel project on this blog and we started corresponding. Several emails about surfing, skateboarding, tattoos, and the art scene in Maine later she agreed to share her holiday list with us. Thank you Kate, I can’t wait to hang out in the city in 2011!
Kate’s List:

I would love to get my green thumb on by volunteering at Eagle Street Rooftop Farm, a 6000 square foot green roof organic vegetable farm located atop a warehouse rooftop in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.

Rafiki Friend Chain Support local artisans in Free The Children Countries by wearing these beautiful Rafiki Beads. They’re inspired by the long chains worn by Maasai warriors…beautiful and simple.

I don’t have any tattoos…and I’m not sure if I want one…but I would love to spend an afternoon hanging out at Saved Tattoos and watching Scott work his magic.

Sipping a flat white and reading Just Kids and Life at Cafe Grumpy in NYC…yes please.

I’ll take anything from the Lake and Stars…

Had a leisurely ride up the coast behind a few bikers out enjoying the sunshine. Must say a man in a classic Harley Davidson black leather jacket and wearing great boots riding a Harley is something..
Tonight I’m catching up on all things computer related (blogging, Flickr, client stuff) tonight. Don’t feel too bad for me though, tomorrow I am starting off the day with coffee at a favorite local spot with a good friend followed by a massage. What happens next I don’t have any idea, but let me tell you I will be back in the water attempting to stand up on that darn (love it) surfboard again Sunday. It if takes me the rest of my life I am determined to stand up and ride some decent size waves. Right now a bit of fear (colder water, stronger waves than what I have experienced up till recently) has been building up a wall I need to break down. My good friend Jessica who is fearless and adventurous has agreed to join me at the beach one day soon and (so excited) invited me along for a skateboarding lesson sometime this month. I promise photos from it, had one in LA and was so fun. Are we ever too old for skateboarding (or learning to) and getting a tattoo? Oh yes, I’ve been thinking about getting a second tattoo…but more on that later. xo enjoy the weekend!!

I love the look of the couple in this picture. Can’t quite read her tattoo, but like it. Check out her skull ring.

I’m a bit obsessed with tattoos right now. I have one and every once in a while think about getting another. Probably will not, and not on my hands, but I love looking at people with tattoos. Some people have the most interesting artwork, i.e. this man’s hands are brilliant. Of course, while I’m thinking how cool he looks I’m also thinking wow that must have hurt!
